The Tequila Taste Map

The Pros Don't Ask the Brand. They Ask Highlands or Valles.

Jalisco grows agave in two regions, and which one your bottle came from decides more about the taste than the label does. Here's the whole map, with three real bottles from $41.99 to $89.99.

The Taste Map

01

Same plant. Same process. Different dirt.

Jalisco has two agave regions, and where a bottle was grown tells you more about how it tastes than the name on the front.

02

Highlands (Los Altos): sweet, floral, softer.

Red clay, high elevation, cool nights. The agave grows big and sweet, so the tequila comes out sweet, floral, a little fruity.

03

Lowlands (Los Valles): earthy, peppery, mineral.

Volcanic soil, down by the volcano. These come out earthy and peppery, with a mineral edge that's almost salty.

04

Price has nothing to do with it.

The cheapest bottle on this page is $41.99 and the most expensive is $89.99, and neither side wins on money. It's about which side you like.

05

Flip the bottle.

Look for Los Altos or Los Valles. That one word tells you more than the whole front label.
