Product Description

Selbach Incline Riesling is produced by Johannes Selbach of the J. & H. Selbach estate, whose family has been making wine on the steep slate slopes of the Mosel for nearly four centuries. The wine draws from multiple sites across the Middle Mosel, with vineyards clustered between the towns of Piesport, Zeltingen, Graach, and Wehlen — a stretch of the river's most celebrated bends where south and southwest-facing slopes of blue and red Devonian slate receive concentrated sunlight reflected from the river below. The name Incline is a direct reference to the terroir's defining characteristic: the nearly vertical pitch of these vineyards, which in places approaches 60 to 70 degrees and makes mechanization impossible, demanding hand labor at every stage of cultivation and harvest.

Fermentation proceeds entirely in stainless steel at naturally cool temperatures, a choice that preserves the full spectrum of aromatic compounds developed during slow ripening on the slate slopes without introducing oxidative or wood-derived character. The wine carries a hint of residual sugar — calibrated to balance the Mosel's characteristically high natural acidity rather than to produce a perceptibly sweet wine. Bottled under Stelvin closure to protect its precision and freshness, the Incline was conceived by Johannes Selbach as an accessible entry point into the quality and character that the great Mosel slopes are capable of producing at any price point.

The nose is vibrant and precise — lemon zest, green apple, white peach, and a distinctive wet slate minerality that is the signature of Devonian slate-grown Riesling. The palate is lively and fruit-forward, with the wine's residual sugar integrating seamlessly with the bright acidity to produce a tension that is refreshing rather than cloying. The finish is clean and mineral, closing on citrus pith and a persistent, cool slate note that lingers well past the wine's immediate fruit impression.
