Product Description

Redbreast Moscatel Wine Cask is a single pot still Irish whiskey produced at Midleton Distillery in County Cork, built on the same foundation of malted and unmalted barley that defines the broader Redbreast range. The expression takes its name and its distinguishing character from a finishing period in casks previously used to age Moscatel, a sweet fortified wine produced primarily in the Iberian Peninsula from Muscat grape varieties. The choice of Moscatel casks introduces a finishing influence that is notably different in character from the Oloroso sherry wood more commonly associated with the house style.

The whiskey undergoes its primary maturation in a combination of American oak bourbon casks and traditional sherry butts before being transferred to Moscatel wine casks for a final finishing period. The Moscatel casks, still carrying the residual compounds of the sweet wine, impart floral aromatics, fresh grape character, and a honeyed sweetness that overlays the spirit's pot still grain structure without erasing it. The finishing duration is calibrated to introduce the wine cask's signature without tipping the balance away from the whiskey's underlying identity.

The palate opens with fresh stone fruit and a pronounced floral lift — characteristics directly traceable to the Moscatel finishing — before settling into the warm cereal and gentle spice of the pot still base. The texture is soft and approachable, with a sweetness that is fruit-driven rather than sugar-heavy. The finish carries dried grape, light honey, and a faint tannic dryness from the wine wood that provides structure to an otherwise delicate close.
