This latest installment marks the third release devoted to French oak, continuing the program’s exploration of a timber with a distinctive profile that interacts uniquely with the distillate. For this edition, Buffalo Trace selected new French oak barrels that had been acquired in 2013 and then filled with the distillery’s Mash #1—the same mash bill used for Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare. The maturation in these French oak casks contributes notes that can include vanilla, gentle spice, and subtle tannins, enhancing the layered sweetness and oak-derived nuances that define Old Charter Oak. The result is a whiskey with a refined, balanced finish that reflects the careful selection of timber and the distillery’s time-honored production methods. Bottled at 92 proof, this expression is released in limited quantities and, as of November 2021, is available in restricted supply for collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the nuance of oak-driven maturation.
