Legent is a Kentucky whiskey born from a collaboration between two of the spirits world's most significant blending traditions — Jim Beam and Suntory, brought together under Beam Suntory's shared ownership. The project paired Fred Noe, seventh-generation master distiller at Jim Beam, with Shinji Fukuyo, chief blender at Suntory and the steward of one of Japan's most celebrated blending philosophies. Legent debuted in 2019 as the first new standalone bourbon brand from the company in nearly three decades, its label declaring it a Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey partially finished in wine and sherry casks — an honest acknowledgment that what is inside exceeds the boundaries of conventional bourbon production. It is distilled at Jim Beam's Clermont Distillery in Kentucky using a mashbill of approximately 76% corn, 12% rye, and 10% malted barley.
The whiskey is assembled from three distinct streams. The foundation is a Jim Beam Kentucky straight bourbon aged approximately four to five years in new charred American white oak. A portion of that bourbon is then transferred to California red wine casks for roughly one additional year of finishing, and a separate portion finishes in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks for approximately two years. The three components are then blended by Fukuyo, who brings the Japanese art of multi-cask assemblage — a practice foundational to Suntory's blending philosophy and largely unfamiliar to American bourbon production — to bear on a Kentucky base distillate. The finished blend is bottled at 47% ABV / 94 proof without chill filtration.
The nose is immediately distinctive — jammy red fruit, cherry, and a wine-driven sweetness arrive first, backed by caramel, brown sugar, and almond from the bourbon base. The palate is soft and full-bodied, with berry compote, vanilla, and dark chocolate developing alongside a peppery spice that provides structure beneath the fruit-forward surface. The sherry component adds a nutty, oxidative depth that builds through the mid-palate without dominating. The finish is moderately long and pleasantly tannic, closing on oak, leather, and a lingering wine-derived sweetness that ties the expression's three components into a coherent and unhurried close.
