Ichiro's Malt Chichibu is the single malt flagship of the Chichibu Distillery, founded by Ichiro Akuto northwest of Tokyo and now regarded as one of the most inventive names in Japanese whisky. Each year Chichibu releases a one-off "US Edition" built specifically for the American market, and the 2025 release continues that tradition with a fresh label illustration and an entirely new vatting - making it a must-have for collectors who follow this cult series.
Bottled at batch strength (52.5% ABV), this expression is vatted from 16 individual casks aged 5 to 9 years, including ex-bourbon, ex-IPA, and ex-imperial stout barrels, with a touch of peated malt and an unusually long Mizunara oak ferment. The result is a whisky with aromas of red apple, candied orange, and Tahitian vanilla, opening into a floral, slightly sweet palate that finishes with a distinctive wisp of hoppy bitterness from the beer-cask influence.
Best enjoyed neat or with a single large ice cube to let the cask complexity unfold - this is a whisky built for sipping slowly and comparing against past US Editions.
