Old Charter Oak Finest Oak is produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, under a brand name that traces its origins to 1874, when Adam and Ben Chapeze introduced the Old Charter name in honor of the American white oak — the tree whose wood has shaped the character of Kentucky bourbon since the craft's earliest days. The Old Charter Oak series, of which Finest Oak is a core expression, was conceived by Buffalo Trace as a study in the influence of barrel selection on bourbon character, with each release in the line drawing attention to a specific dimension of oak's contribution to the finished spirit. Finest Oak focuses that inquiry on the American white oak at its most refined — barrels sourced exclusively from Canton Cooperage, one of Kentucky's most respected cooperages, using hand-selected staves from premier American white oak forests.
The staves are hand-sorted and open-air seasoned in the Kentucky climate before being shaped into barrels at Canton Cooperage — a preparation process that allows the wood to shed harsh tannins naturally over time, ensuring a more integrated and nuanced oak influence once the spirit enters the barrel. The bourbon matures in these select new charred American white oak barrels in Buffalo Trace's rickhouses, where Kentucky's pronounced seasonal temperature swings drive an active cycle of expansion and contraction between the spirit and the wood. This rigorous process — from forest selection through open-air seasoning to rickhouse maturation — is designed to honor the stave's full journey and extract the oak's character with precision rather than force. The finished bourbon is bottled at 47.5% ABV / 95 proof.
The nose opens with warm vanilla, caramelized sugar, and seasoned oak — a clean, classically structured bouquet that reflects the quality of the barrel preparation. The palate is smooth and full-bodied, moving through toffee, butterscotch, honeyed oak, and a gentle baking spice that builds steadily through the mid-palate without sharpening. The finish is long and warming, closing on toasted oak, a thread of pepper, and a lingering sweetness that reflects the careful integration of wood and spirit over the course of maturation. The overall profile is one of balance and refinement, shaped from forest to bottle by the considered handling of a single exceptional material.
