Founded in 1950 by Don Alfonso Jiménez Rosales, co-founder of Tequila Herradura, Caballito Cerrero emerged from his desire to uphold traditional tequila-making methods after a family dispute. Known for its mantra, “El que no necesita Herraduras” (“the one that does not require horseshoes”), Caballito Cerrero is produced at the historic Santa Rita Fabrica, the oldest known agave distillation site in Mexico, dating back to the 16th century. In 2018, the Jiménez family chose to stop labeling their product as tequila to honor the traditional growing and distillation practices of the Amatitán region, building a cult-like following among aficionados worldwide.
Now recognized as “Destilado de Agave,” Caballito Cerrero is made with mature agaves from the Amatitán region, including Blue Weber and Chato agave varieties. The Jiménez family, with over 15 generations of expertise, remains committed to producing 100% agave spirits that honor Mexico’s rich distillation history, making Caballito Cerrero a favorite among die-hard tequila enthusiasts.
