A blanco is unaged — bottled within 60 days of distillation. A reposado rests in oak barrels between 2 months and 1 year. That time in wood softens the sharper edges of the agave spirit and adds warmth, a little vanilla, sometimes dried fruit. Done right, it keeps the agave character front and center. Done wrong, the oak overwhelms everything and you can't taste the tequila anymore.

Why does "additive-free" matter specifically for reposados?

Reposados are the most manipulated category in tequila. The barrel aging already adds some sweetness — which makes it very easy to cover mediocre agave with glycerin and caramel color and tell a compelling story. The 1% additive allowance under Mexican law means producers can add sweeteners, oak extract, and coloring without disclosing any of it.
