Tequila Ocho Extra Añejo La Estancia 2022 is the latest single-estate, vintage-dated release from Tequila Ocho, the brand that pioneered the idea of terroir in tequila. Crafted by legendary master distiller Carlos Camarena in partnership with Jesus Hernandez, each Ocho Extra Añejo is made from 100% Blue Weber agave grown on a single named estate and harvested in a single year, so the bottle in front of you reflects exactly where and when those agaves were grown. This vintage comes from Rancho La Estancia, a high-altitude estate in San Diego de Alejandría, Jalisco, sitting over 6,000 feet above sea level on red, mineral-rich volcanic soil that gives the agave here its own distinct character compared to Ocho's other single estates.
Production follows Ocho's traditional, hands-on methods from start to finish: agaves are roasted slowly in brick ovens, crushed the old-fashioned way, fermented in wooden vats, and distilled in small-batch copper pot stills. The spirit then rests for three full years in once-used American whiskey barrels, well beyond the two-year minimum required for extra añejo classification, allowing it to take on deep color and rounded oak character while still letting the agave shine through. On the nose, expect caramelized agave, toasted oak, vanilla bean, dried fruit, and warm baking spice. The palate is rich with brown sugar and roasted agave, layered with cinnamon spice, buttery oak, and notes of dark chocolate, finishing long and warming with soft vanilla, cracked black pepper, and a lingering sweetness from the agave itself.
At 40% ABV, this is a sipping tequila meant to be savored neat in a glencairn or snifter, slightly above room temperature, to let the oak and agave aromas fully open up. It also makes an exceptional base for an añejo Old Fashioned for those who want to use it in a cocktail. Because each vintage and estate is produced in limited quantity and will never be repeated exactly the same way again, this is a bottle for collectors and tequila enthusiasts who appreciate traceability and small-batch craftsmanship as much as what's in the glass.
