Product Description

La Boutanche Gamay is produced in the southern reaches of Beaujolais, France, a region whose granitic and sandy soils have long provided the foundational terroir for Gamay noir à jus blanc — the grape variety that defines the appellation. Southern Beaujolais sits at a transitional point between the granite-dominated Crus to the north and the clay-limestone soils further south, a position that yields Gamay of distinctive freshness and approachability. The wine is the product of a collaboration between Sélection Massale and vigneron Olivier Minot, whose work in the region reflects a commitment to site-expressive, low-intervention viticulture.

Sélection massale — the practice of propagating new vines from cuttings selected from the best existing plants within a vineyard — underpins the viticultural philosophy behind this wine, preserving the genetic diversity and site adaptation that clonal selection tends to reduce over time. In the cellar, production follows natural winemaking principles, with fermentation driven by indigenous yeasts and minimal use of sulfur. Beaujolais tradition favors carbonic or semi-carbonic maceration for Gamay, a technique that enhances the variety's characteristic fruit aromatics while softening tannin structure.

The palate is defined by the bright, primary fruit character that Gamay expresses in southern Beaujolais — fresh red berry, cherry, and a subtle floral lift that carbonic maceration tends to amplify. The structure is light to medium, with fine tannins and a lively acidity that gives the wine its sense of energy and drinkability. The finish is clean and fruit-forward, with a faint earthy mineral note that grounds the expression in its granitic southern Beaujolais origin.
