Product Description

This mezcal is produced by Lucio Morales Lopez in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca, a village renowned for its time-honored distilling traditions and the distinctive grasses and cacti used in maturing spirits here. The smoke signature is immediately apparent, inviting the senses with a rich, roasted-meat aroma that mingles with sweet notes of ground corn and a hint of pine tar. The bouquet is deep and layered, suggesting a complexity that grows with each swirl of the glass. Subtle hints of minerals and herbal undertones drift through the air, adding nuance without overpowering the core smoke character. This is a mezcal that speaks of its terroir—the hills, the espadín or maguey variety used, and the careful, patient craft of the maestro who guides the process from agave to bottle.

On the palate, the distillate evolves to reveal a tapestry of flavors: leather, caramelized banana, and a touch of toasted barley. The texture is smooth and balanced, carrying the sweetness of the banana against the roast and the earthy, grainy notes of barley. The leather note grounds the sweetness with a savory edge, while a delicate peppery warmth emerges toward the finish, reminiscent of woodsmoke and dried fruit. An earlier batch of this mezcal was produced by Don Juan Hernández Méndez in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca, a neighboring community noted for its own storied mezcal tradition. Together, the two generations reflect a lineage of craftsmanship that honors traditional methods while inviting the taster to explore a spectrum of aromatic and palate-driven experiences unique to this region. This bottle captures the essence of Oaxaca’s mezcal heritage, offering a memorable balance between rustic smoke, fruit-forward sweetness, and a nuanced, enduring finish.
