Martha Stoumen Post Flirtation Red 2023 is a blend of dry-farmed Zinfandel and Carignan sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Northern California's Sierra Foothills, a region of granite-influenced soils and significant elevation that tempers the heat of the Central Valley and preserves the natural acidity critical to this style of wine. Zinfandel grown under dry-farm conditions in the Foothills develops a leaner, more restrained profile than irrigated fruit from warmer sites, while old-vine Carignan contributes a savory, chaparral-driven character rooted in decades of soil adaptation. The two varieties have a long history as companions in California's field blend tradition.
Production follows a low-intervention approach consistent with Martha Stoumen's broader winemaking philosophy. Native yeast fermentation drives the conversion without the addition of commercial inoculants, and sulfur use is minimized throughout the process. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration, preserving the natural turbidity and microbial complexity that give the wine its texture and sense of place. The absence of new oak aging keeps the fruit and grape-derived compounds in the foreground, unmediated by wood influence.
The palate is defined by bright red fruit — fresh cherry, pomegranate, and a hibiscus-tinged berry quality that is characteristic of early-harvested, dry-farmed Zinfandel. Carignan provides a savory undercurrent and a structural backbone that keeps the wine from reading as purely fruit-driven. The texture is light to medium, with fine tannins and lively acidity that make the wine well-suited to a slight chill. The finish is clean and relatively brief, closing on dried herb and a faint mineral note drawn from the granitic Foothills soils.
